From measured dimensions to a theoretical metal weight
Each calculator follows a checkable sequence: describe the stock shape, calculate its volume, apply the selected density, and convert the result into useful units.
Start with the dimensions that describe the actual shape
Plate and flat bar use width and thickness. Solid round bar uses diameter. Pipe and tube use outside dimensions and wall thickness so the hollow center is subtracted. Length and quantity are then applied to the section volume.
Use a density that matches the material or alloy
The calculator multiplies volume by the selected nominal or typical density. Choose the exact alloy when it is listed. If your drawing, specification, or supplier provides a more suitable value, enter that documented density instead.
Keep units consistent through the calculation
Metric and US customary entries are converted to consistent internal units before multiplication. Intermediate values are not rounded; only the displayed result is formatted to the selected precision.
Treat the result as a theoretical estimate
Nominal dimensions and published density do not include every mill tolerance, coating, cutout, weld, fitting, package, or material variation. Actual scale weight and commercial invoice weight can therefore differ.
Verify the inputs that matter to your decision
- Match the grade, alloy, stock form, and unit system to the quotation or drawing.
- Check whether dimensions are nominal, measured, finished, or purchased oversize.
- Add packaging and other non-metal items separately for transport planning.
- Use supplier certificates, project requirements, or an agreed scale weight when those values control.
