Use this checklist when asking a supplier for a quote. Mark anything you are unsure about for confirmation.

- Dimensions
- Plate, pipe or bar; dimensions and units.
- Quantity
- Number of pieces, length per piece or required weight.
- Tolerances
- Permitted dimensional variation, if specified.
- Finish and processing
- Surface finish, delivery condition and cutting requirements.
- Delivery
- Destination and preferred arrival date.
Add any inspection-document or packaging requirements. Theoretical weight is for planning; confirm the billing basis with the supplier.
Formula
Plate volume = nominal thickness × nominal width × nominal length.
Theoretical mass per plate = plate volume × nominal steel density.
Total theoretical mass = mass per plate × quantity.
For rectangular cut blanks, calculate each distinct size separately rather than averaging dimensions across the order.

Frequently asked questions
What dimensions should I enter for steel plate?
Enter the nominal ordered thickness, width, and length for a purchasing estimate. Use measured dimensions only when the task is explicitly based on an existing plate.
Does the formula work for sheet metal?
Yes for a flat solid rectangle, but the product name, tolerances, available gauges, and ordering practices differ. Use the actual thickness rather than a gauge number unless the gauge mapping is documented.
Are holes and cutouts deducted?
Not in the base plate calculation. Model substantial cutouts separately and remember that offcut disposition, nesting, and purchased blank size still affect procurement.
Can I calculate price from plate weight?
You can combine a theoretical mass with a clearly defined price basis for planning, but the supplier's unit price, minimums, processing, scrap, and settlement method govern the commercial total.
