Formula

Theoretical mass = cross-sectional area × length × nominal aluminum-alloy density × quantity.

Solid plate and bar sections use their geometric area; round tube subtracts the inside circle from the outside circle.

Inside diameter = outside diameter − 2 × wall thickness for a concentric round tube.

Aluminum Association nominal densities are calculation values and should not be presented as guaranteed engineering requirements.

Frequently asked questions

What density should I use for aluminum?

Use the nominal density published for the specific alloy when available. Do not assume a single value applies to every aluminum grade or product condition.

Does aluminum temper change the weight?

Temper has a much larger effect on mechanical properties than on nominal density, but the applicable supplier or industry data should still be tied to the alloy and product.

Can I calculate an extrusion from outside width and height?

Only if the cross-section is one of the supported simple shapes. Complex extrusions need a documented cross-sectional area or mass per length from the profile supplier.

Why should I keep the density source?

It lets buyers and engineers verify the alloy, units, date, and intended use of the value instead of treating a generic number as universally exact.
